भारत में तीव्र नगरीकरण ने शहरों की प्रशासनिक सीमाओं से बाहर स्थित ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में व्यापक परिवर्तन उत्पन्न किए हैं। इन क्षेत्रों में भूमि उपयोग, आवासीय संरचना, आर्थिक गतिविधियों, सामाजिक संबंधों तथा आधारभूत सुविधाओं में तेजी से परिवर्तन दिखाई देता है। इस संक्रमण क्षेत्र को सामान्यतः ग्रामीण-नगरीय फ्रिंज (Rural–Urban Fringe) कहा जाता है, जहाँ ग्रामीण एवं नगरीय दोनों प्रकार की विशेषताएँ एक साथ विद्यमान रहती हैं। प्रस्तुत शोध-पत्र का उद्देश्य जोधपुर शहर के परिधीय ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में विकसित हो रहे ग्रामीण-नगरीय संक्रमण का भौगोलिक विश्लेषण करना है। अध्ययन में नगरीकरण के कारण भूमि उपयोग परिवर्तन, आवासीय विस्तार, परिवहन नेटवर्क, व्यवसायिक संरचना, सामाजिक परिवर्तन तथा आधारभूत सुविधाओं के विकास का समेकित मूल्यांकन किया गया है। शोध में प्राथमिक एवं द्वितीयक आँकड़ों, क्षेत्रीय सर्वेक्षण, मानचित्रों तथा भौगोलिक विश्लेषण तकनीकों का उपयोग किया गया है। अध्ययन से स्पष्ट होता है कि जोधपुर महानगर का प्रभाव नगर सीमा से बाहर स्थित गाँवों तक तीव्रता से विस्तारित हुआ है। परिणामस्वरूप परिधीय ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में कृषि भूमि का आंशिक रूपांतरण, आवासीय कॉलोनियों का विकास, सेवा क्षेत्र का विस्तार तथा परिवहन संपर्क में उल्लेखनीय वृद्धि हुई है। साथ ही सामाजिक एवं आर्थिक संरचना में भी महत्वपूर्ण परिवर्तन हुए हैं। यह अध्ययन दर्शाता है कि यदि इन संक्रमण क्षेत्रों का वैज्ञानिक एवं सहभागी दृष्टिकोण से नियोजन नहीं किया गया, तो भविष्य में अनियोजित शहरी विस्तार, पर्यावरणीय क्षरण तथा आधारभूत सुविधाओं पर अत्यधिक दबाव जैसी समस्याएँ उत्पन्न हो सकती हैं।
