A Study on Container Freight Station (CFS) Operations and Logistics Management Performance: Evidence from a Container Freight Station in Chennai

Container Freight Stations (CFS) play a role in India’s international trade system. They act as hubs located away from busy port areas handling cargo operations such as storage, customs checks and transport. This article shares findings from a field study conducted at a Container Freight Station in Chennai. The study looks at how four main areas. Container handling efficiency, warehousing operations, documentation and customs clearance and transportation management. Affect logistics performance. Data was collected from 75 employees working in operational roles using a structured questionnaire with five-point Likert-scale responses. The data was analysed using statistics Cronbach’s alpha to check reliability Pearson correlation to measure relationships and one-way ANOVA to compare groups. The results show that the measurement tools used were very reliable with Cronbachs alpha values ranging from 0.946 to 0.956. All four operational dimensions showed statistically significant positive connections with overall logistics performance. Among these container handling efficiencies had the link with a correlation coefficient of 0.923. This means when handling containers is efficient overall performance improves more than with factors. When looking at differences across staff there was no variation based on work experience or job function. However, age did make a difference. Younger employees tended to give ratings about performance compared to older staff. This suggests that younger workers might have expectations or less exposure to the full scope of CFS operations. The article concludes that for Container Freight Station operators who want improvements in logistics performance the top priority should be improving container handling efficiency. At the time they must keep investing in warehousing, documentation processes and transportation coordination. The study also offers recommendations based directly on the survey data. These include training for staff improved use of technology and stronger coordination, between departments.
