Sustainable Tourism Development in India

Dr. Beena Sharma

Sustainable tourism aims to reduce the pressure and problems that come from the complex connections between the tourism industry, visitors, the environment, and the local communities. It's a way of managing tourism so that both people and nature can stay healthy and keep their quality over time. Sustainable development is hard to clearly explain. The meaning of this term will probably keep changing as time goes on. Sustainable tourism is the way of managing tourism resources so that economic, social, and aesthetic needs are met while keeping the environment healthy, protecting important natural processes, biodiversity, and the systems that support life. Over the last thirty years, the tourist industry has played a big role in the growth of the global economy. Many countries around the world have benefited a lot from this sector. This article tries to explain the ideas behind sustainable development in tourism, which come from different sources, and how tourism, as an important industry, can be developed in a way that is sustainable.  Sustainable tourism is expected to address the three main ideas of ecological sustainability, social and cultural sustainability, and economic sustainability for both present and future generations. In simpler terms, the development of sustainable tourism should always benefit local communities, governments, and investors, who are key players in the tourism industry, now and in the years to come. This paper examines the concept, importance, challenges, government initiatives, and strategies for promoting sustainable tourism in India.
