Lipamudra Singh & Dr. Ajanta Nayak

Safety of food is an important aspect of public health as it guarantees that food that is eaten is safe and of good quality. In India, the Food Safety and Standards Market Research Report is formulated by the Government of India as a means to regulate and enforce the norms of food safety. This awareness of food safety standards in India is needed along with the emphasis on wellbeing. The research proceeds tracing the FSSAI’s activities in relation to their purpose and describing some basic guidelines that were created to prevent the flooding of the market with unsafe goods. It then describes the present situation in terms of competent consumers, based on the results of surveys and other research on consumer behavior. It explores the role of branding and certifying labelling, for example, the FSSAI logo, etc. along with organic certification as one of the means in filling the gap between such understanding in making better choices. The role of the media and technologies to raise the awareness level and informative among them successful social media and television campaigns is discussed. The problem of rural and urban areas disparity, wrong information for the consumers and lack of reliable information are also addressed. Moreover, the report discusses initiatives such as the EAT RIGHT INDIA campaign by the FSSAI and the involvement of NGOs, schools, and other institutions in consumer education. It concludes with practical approaches to resolve prevailing awareness issues especially with the need to leverage technology, build strong policies and provide education in order to change and sustain the culture of food safety. It identifies the partnership between regulatory bodies, food companies, and customers, as an important step for a better and safer tomorrow.
