FIGHTING THE SYSTEM, BREAKING THE SILENCE SHASHI DESHPANDE’S: ‘JAYA'

In That Long Silence Jaya is forced to be subservient to her husband Mohan. He is unaware how their relationship is reduced to marital rape which Joya allows in order to maintain family integrity and not to disturb the order. But she herself breaks, disintegrates from the inside and suffers alone. She grows afraid of her own emotions and descries. However, towards the end of the novel she regains her equilibrium and accepts her happiness in the role she is asked to perform. This does not transform the outside world but transforms her own self. The paper discusses how this comes about.
